About Humanscale
Humanscale is the leading designer and manufacturer of ergonomic products that improve health and wellness at work.
Their award-winning office solutions, including self-adjusting seating, sit/stand desks, monitor arms and task lighting, inspire movement, and support the user in every posture.
The Humanscale Design Studio, based in New York City, abides by the philosophy that good design achieves more with less. Function, simplicity, and longevity, and sustainability are at the core of all our designs. When thinking through the design and manufacturing of each product, we carefully consider the materials and resources used, in aim of creating an overall Net Positive impact.
They are known for their history of collaboration with the legendary designer Niels Diffrient, who designed many of our task chairs, including the iconic Freedom chair — the first self-adjusting chair without manual knobs and levers. We also partner with other esteemed industrial designers, including Don Chadwick and Todd Bracher. Our innovations have been honored with more than 200 prestigious awards since 2007 and featured in various museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art.
Compensation
Few things are more important to employees than compensation. We evaluated Humanscale’s compensation practices and found that Humanscale is transparent and consistent with the application of their pay grades and ranges. Additionally, their compensation packages are typically on the higher-end of the industry standard and they have virtually no wage gap between female and male compensation packages.
Leadership
Humanscale’s leadership team has an extreme level of tenure. Across the North American business unit, the average tenure of the leadership team is 14 years. Unlike other companies in their industry, Humanscale’s female/male leadership mix is more heavily weighted towards women: 65/35.
Virtually all of their sales leaders started in the company as sales people, giving them the valuable experience of understanding what it takes to be successful. This experience helps their newer team members get started off on the right foot and experience success sooner than later.
Perks & Benefits
Humanscale has both standard and unique perks & benefits. They have employer sponsored health, dental, vision, and pet insurance programs. They have a 401k program that includes a healthy employer match. All of their North American employees can earn up to 3-weeks paid time off, with earned time off increasing by a week after 5, 10 and 15 years of Service.
Humanscale also offers a hybrid work schedule to many of it’s employees. Some employees, due to the nature of their jobs, don’t have this flexibility.
Their best perk is the employee purchase program of Humanscale’s products. Each employee can purchase up to 5 items per year at an extremely deep discount. The most commonly purchased items are their chairs and task lights.
Co-workers
Humanscale really stands out when it comes to the co-worker experience. Most employees rate their co-workers more like close friends than colleagues. These tight relationships enable the employees to lean on each other for guidance and support when necessary. It’s common to see the co-workers hanging out after work over a drink, or spending time with each other on the weekend.
Work-life Balance
Achieving work-life balance for many employees is rather easy to accomplish. Work your schedule, get your work completed, go home and enjoy your personal time.
Most salespeople, in any industry, recognize that if you want to be successful, you have to put in more hours than they typical office employee. That is true at Humanscale. The most successful salespeople and leaders put in a lot of work. To achieve that ideal work-life balance, salespeople and leaders need to take ownership of setting their schedules and accomplishing their respective goals.
Communication
Communication across the organization happens on a consistent basis, though some communication isn’t always filtered down to the employes. The CEO holds a quarterly town meeting where he gives an update on the company and answers questions from the employees.
It is worth noting that the CEO is accessible to most employees. He regularly spends time in the factory, understands the company’s product better than anybody, goes out on sales calls, and any employee in the New York office can schedule time to sit with him.
Professional Development
Humanscale’s professional development program has several levels. First, all new salespeople, leaders and key service team members attend a week-long new hire training program, which is facilitated by the best training team in the industry.
Second, all salespeople, leaders and key service team members attend a second week of training about 9-months after they’ve completed their new hire training.
Third, employees are exposed to an internal training program at least once a year and salespeople are exposed to training every month.
Lastly, as employees move up the ranks, they are given the opportunity to attend external professional development programs.
Meaningful Work
Finding meaningful work at Humanscale isn’t that difficult. The company’s sustainability and environmental goals, the health and wellness that people achieve through using their products, and the team spirit that exists across the company, ensure that employees feel personally fulfilled.
Parental Leave
Paid parental leave isn’t a stand-out benefit for employees as it is only 4 weeks, in addition to other locally required paid leave. The CEO and CFO are aware of this and are working diligently to enhance this benefit for new moms and dads.
